EASTON, Mass. – Coppin State's six-game conference winning streak ended with a 23-4 loss at Stonehill on Friday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field. The Eagles fell to 12-21 overall and 11-11 in the NEC while the Skyhawks improved to 13-22 on the year and 8-11 in league play.
Nico Felber and four CSU relievers walked 17 Stonehill batters while the Skyhawks added 12 hits while taking advantage of three Eagles errors. Felber was charged with three earned runs while walking five over the first 3.0 innings.
Jackson Montgomery and
Michael Matthews gave up seven runs each over the next 2.1 innings before
Justin Ritz had a great outing, striking out three while going a scoreless 1.2 innings. In the final inning,
Brandon Stephens allowed a pair of runs.
Kai Holm and his mid-game replacement
Gabe Breckenridge both had a pair of hits with Breckenridge adding a triple and driving in two. Holm and
Bryce Thompson were also credited with RBIs.
Stonehill took a 3-0 lead after scoring three in the second before Coppin got on the board in the third on a single by Holm.
Noah Murciano scored on the play after him and
Anthony Divittorio had back-to-back singles.
The Skyhawks got that run back and added another in the bottom half, and then scored 14 runs over the next three innings to pull away.
Breckenridge drove in
Victor Alongi and
Braylon Watson with a two-out triple to left center in the top of the ninth and Thompson brought him in with a single for the final run. The series opener ended as
Liam McCallum flew out to left.
Game two of the series will be played on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 pm.
