Men’s Hoops Falls Just Short Against South Carolina State on Senior Night

BALTIMORE – Ryan Archey led all players with 17 points while Greg Spurlock and Justin Winston added 12 points apiece as the Coppin State men's basketball team fell to South Carolina State, 61-58 on Monday night at PEC Arena.  The Eagles fell to 2-25 and 1-12 in the MEAC while the Bulldogs improved to 14-16 overall and 9-4 in league play.
 
Prior to the game, Coppin honored its seniors with Winston, Malik Battle and Isaiah Gross.
 
A freshman from, Clinton, Md., Archey hit 5-of-10 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the line while adding three rebounds and a steal. Winston and Spurlock both hit four field goals with two threes and two free throws apiece. 
 
Aa'Reyon Munir-Jones had eight points, three rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists and both Gross and Camaren Sparrow matched him with three steals each. Gross chipped in five points, two rebounds and two assists.
 
Coppin narrowly outshot the Bulldogs, 41.3% to 40.4%, but South Carolina State outrebounded the Eagles, 39-24 which translated into 15 second-chance points.
 
How it Happened
  • Coppin held the largest lead of the first half at 12-6 at the 13:42 mark following a 7-0 run, five of those points came from Winston.
  • The Eagles held a small lead through most of the half until the Bulldogs recorded a dunk in transition to go up, 27-25 with 3:38 left.
  • South Carolina State increased its advantage to 30-25, before Winston answered with a three before Spurlock hit a pair of free throws to tie it at the break.
  • Both teams were cold from the field to start the second half, but the Bulldogs were able to build a 45-35 advantage with 10:14 remaining.
  • Coppin went to a five-guard lineup and was able to claw their way back into it, starting with a three-point play from Munir-Jones.
  • Achey then scored six points during an 8-0 CSU run, tying the score at 54 with 2:43 remaining following an And-1.
  • The teams traded baskets before the visitors hit a free throw with 1:03 remaining to go up, 59-58.
  • Following a CSU turnover and a Bulldogs miss, Coppin called timeout with 18 seconds left and Battle missed a three from the wing.
  • SC State grabbed a rebound and hit two free throws with two seconds left to go up three.
  • Coppin found Winston near midcourt on the inbounds pass following the timeout, and his game-tying shot rimmed out.
