SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped the opener of a three-game series at Le Moyne, 17-1 on Thursday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Eagles fell to 5-14 overall and 4-6 in the NEC while the Dolphins improved to 8-13 on the year and 4-5 in league play.
Kai Holm drove in Coppin's only run with an RBI single in the fifth, but the Eagles had just five base hits compared to Le Moyne's 19.
Anthony Divittorio, Sam Nieves, Daniel Moore and
Bryce Thompson had the other base knocks for the Eagles. Nieves also drew a walk and stole a base.
Nico Felber got the loss on the mound, allowing five runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings.
Jackson Montgomery threw the next 1.2 innings and gave up seven runs, followed by
Michael Matthews with three runs in his inning of work.
Justin Ritz got the final four outs and was charged with just one run.
Le Moyne got out to a quick 4-0 lead with four runs in the first before Felber got a 1-2-3 second inning. The Dolphins scored a run off him in the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to six.
Montgomery tossed a scoreless fifth, but Le Moyne got seven runs in the sixth before Coppin scored on in the seventh.
Brody Black drew a leadoff walk off the relief pitcher and got to second on a wild pitch before Holm's single to left.
The hosts scored three in the bottom half of the inning and added another in the eighth.
Coppin and Le Moyne wrap up the series with games on Friday, March 29 at 1 pm, and Saturday, March 30 at 12 pm.
