Men’s Hoops Falls to #1 Norfolk State in MEAC Quarterfinals

NORFOLK, Va. – Khali Horton scored a season-high 16 points as Coppin State's men's basketball team's season ended with a 75-51 loss to #1 Norfolk State in the MEAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday night at Scope Arena.  The Eagles finished at 2-17 overall.

A freshman from Erie, Pa., Horton hit 5-of-9 from the floor with three 3-pointers and also hit 3-of-5 from the line.  Horton finished the season 16-of-46 from behind-the-arc, good for a 34.8% mark.

Also in double figures was Greg Spurlock with ten points, followed by Ryan Archey with nine, Malik Battle with six and both Preist Ryan and Luka Tekavcic with five points apiece.  Aa'Reyon Munir-Jones grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and matched Archey with two assists. Archey, Battle and Spurlock all had a pair of steals.

Norfolk State outshot Coppin, 47.1% to 38.3% and held a 36-25 advantage on the glass.  The Spartans had 15 second-chance points and 28 points off turnovers.

How it Happened
  • Norfolk State raced out to an early 7-0 lead at the first media timeout, but Coppin came right back with a 13-1 run over the next 5:17 to go up, 13-8.
  • Five different Eagles scored during the stretch with Ryan tacking on three free throws and Battle with four points.
  • The Spartans hit a bucket at the 10:26 mark after going without a field goal for over six minutes, but Ryan and Archey scored the next four points, giving CSU its largest lead at 17-10 with 9:15 left.
  • NSU then went on an 11-0 run before Battle hit from the field, and Archey followed with a nifty drive and reverse layup to pull Coppin within 23-21 with just under five minutes remaining in the half.
  • Tekavcic and Winston hit from the floor just before the half, cutting the Spartans' lead to 31-25 at the half.
  • The top-seeded Spartans, who were playing just minutes from campus, opened the second half on an 18-5 run and continued to pull away for the win.
