PHILADELPHIA – Coppin State's softball team got out to an early 3-0 lead, but Penn scored 11 unanswered runs to defeat the Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Penn Park. The Eagles are now 4-7 on the season while the Quakers move to 5-9.
Brooklyn Tapusoa had two of the team's five hits, going 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a walk. Four of Coppin's base hits went for doubles as
Aniyah Haley,
Manaia Fonoti and
Giselle Ulloa all had two-base knocks.
Vanessa Carrizosa was charged with five earned runs over 5.2 innings before the game ended via the run-rule in the sixth.
In the first inning, Fonoti doubled to left center before
Seryna Esparza drew a walk. Ulloa then found the gap in center field to drive in Fonoti before Tapusoa also doubled, bringing in Esparza.
Penn got one of the runs back in the first thanks to an error. Carrizosa retired five-straight, including a 1-2-3 third inning before tying the score with two runs in the fourth. The Quakers took the lead with four runs in the fifth before putting the game out of reach with a four-run sixth.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, March 12 at Mount St. Mary's in a 2 pm doubleheader.
