Softball Splits Twinbill at Mount St. Mary’s; Opens MEAC Play This Weekend

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Coppin State's softball team split a pair of games at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at Meadows Field.  The Eagles (5-8) dropped the first game, 4-3, in eight innings, before taking game two, 7-6.  Statistics were not made available until Wednesday.
 
Game 1: Mount St. Mary's def. Coppin State, 4-3 (8 innings)
 
Aniyah Haley had a pair of hits while four other players had a base hit for the Eagles. Seryna Esparza drew a pair of walks.
 
Vanessa Carrizosa gave up just three earned runs in 7.2 innings of work while striking out seven.
 
Coppin got on the board first with an RBI single by Giselle Ulloa in the first, driving in Manaia Fonoti from second after she singled and advanced on a walk.
 
Carrizosa threw a scoreless first and got a 1-2-3 second inning before allowing an unearned run in the third, tying the score at one.
 
Both teams scored twice in the fourth, with the Eagles getting a pair of runs on a single by Julianna Mejia.  Ulloa scored on the play after being hit by a pitch and getting to third on a single by Brooklyn Tapusoa. A throwing error also allowed Tapusoa to score on the play.
 
The Mount tied it at 3-3 in its half of the fourth, but Carrizosa held them in check over the final three innings, getting 1-2-3 innings in both the fifth and seventh.  They were able to take the opener in the eighth following a pair of singles and a stolen base.
 
Game 2: Coppin State def. Mount St. Mary's, 7-6
 
Avianna Peterson had three hits and an RBI while Ulloa collected two more.  Tapusoa went 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a walk while slugging her second home run of the season.
 
Emily Quintero went the distance in the circle, allowing just two earned runs on five hits.
 
Coppin quickly put three runs across in the second, coming on RBI singles by Quintero, Peterson and Celeste Gonzales.  The Eagles added another run in the fourth as Haley reached on an error.
 
The Mount scored five unanswered runs to take a 5-4 lead after the fifth, but Coppin struck back with a single by Fonoti in the sixth to tie the score. Haley scored all the way from first on the play after an error by the outfielder.
 
In the seventh, Ulloa led off with a single before Tapusoa connected for a home run, giving the Eagles a 7-5 lead.
 
The Mount scored once in its half of the seventh, starting with a fielding error. A groundout advanced the leadoff hitter to second and a passed ball allowed her to score.
 
Up Next: Coppin will travel to Maryland Eastern Shore for a three-game series on March 16-17 to open MEAC play.
