COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Laila Lawrence posted a double-double and Coppin State women's basketball team outscored #18 Maryland in the second half, but it was not enough as the Eagles fell to the Terrapins, 70-47 on Thursday night at the Xfinity Center.
Inside the Numbers
- Lawrence hit 6-of-13 from the field along with a three and three free throws to record a team-high 16 points. She also grabbed a game-high ten rebounds and added three steals, two assists and a block.
- Angel Jones followed with nine points and added four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
- Tiffany Hammond sunk a pair of threes for six points while freshman Mickelle Lowry scored her first collegiate points, finishing with five on the night which included a three.
- Charia Roberts chipped in with four points, Dani McTeer with three points with four boards and both Tyler Gray and Arielle-Vadrelle Belinga had a pair.
- Maryland outshot Coppin, 40.7% to 32.7% and outrebounded the Eagles, 40-31.
- Terrapins' guard Kaylene Smikle led all scorers with 20 points.
- Coppin held their own in the first quarter and trailed just, 15-12, before shooting just 1-of-15 in the second quarter and scored just four points to Maryland's 25 points.
- CSU scored 31 second half points to Maryland's 30.
How it Happened
- Maryland opened the game with a three before McTeer and Jones recorded buckets, giving Coppin a 4-3 advantage at the 8:31 mark.
- After a 5-0 Terrapins run, Coppin tied the score back at eight following a pair of free throws by Jones and a jumper by Gray.
- The game was tied again at 12 with 2:30 left in the first on a turnaround by Belinga and a layup by Jones.
- The Terrapins hit a three just before the end of the quarter and Coppin's only bucket in the second period came on an early three by Hammond to cut the deficit to 17-15 with 8:59 left in the half.
- Maryland scored the next 15 points before a free throw by McTeer with 3:28 remaining and went into the locker room with a 40-16 lead.
- Lawrence hit a pair of early field goals to open the second half and she converted on an old-fashioned three-point play later in the quarter before Hammond nailed a three with two minutes remaining.
- Lowry scored her first collegiate points with a jumper just seconds into the fourth and she followed a triple by Jones with one of her own at the 5:18 mark.
- Following a three by Maryland, Lawrence scored the next six points, including a 3-pointer before a layup by Roberts closed the game.
