Women’s Hoops Routs Saint Francis, 74-38 in Front of Raucous Education Day Crowd

BALTIMORE – Three Eagles scored in double figures and Tyler Gray dished out a career-high ten assists as the Coppin State women's basketball team routed Saint Francis, 74-38, in front of 3,247 fans at PEC Arena on Tuesday morning.  With the victory, the Eagles improved to 2-1 while the Red Flash fell to 0-3.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Laila Lawrence led all players with 19 points and 11 rebounds while adding two blocks and a steal. Lawrence hit 8-of-13 from the floor, a 3-pointer and both of her free throws.
  • Tiffany Hammond buried 5-of-9 from behind-the-arc to finish with 15 points and Angel Jones added another 12 points.
  • Gray's ten assists surpassed the seven assists she recorded against Winthrop while playing at College of Charleston on December 8, 2020.  She is the first Eagles player to record at least ten assists since February 25, 2019, when Brooke Fields had 11 against Delaware State.
  • Cire Worley hit all four of her attempts to finish with nine points, followed by Arielle-Vadrelle Belinga with seven points, five rebounds and two steals.
  • Also chipping in were Dani McTeer with four points and three rebounds while Mickelle Lowry, Niyah Gaston and Charia Roberts all hit field goals.
  • Lowry also added four assists and a pair of steals.
  • The Eagles outshot Saint Francis, 46.7% to 30.4% and had 17 assists which was the most they've had in a game since February 6, 2023.
  • Coppin also forced 28 turnovers which turned into 23 points.
How it Happened
  • Lawrence and Jones gave Coppin an early 4-0 lead with a pair of jumpers before Saint Francis got on the board with a three at the 5:56 mark.
  • The Red Flash added a transition bucket to take their first and only lead of the game at 5-4 with 5:34 in the quarter.
  • After a pair of CSU buckets, Saint Francis cut Coppin's lead to 8-7 before Hammond hit her first three of the game with just under two minutes left.
  • McTeer hit a pair of free throws and Lawrence sunk a three just before time expired, giving the Eagles a 16-10 advantage after one.
  • Coppin opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run, which included a three by Hammond that prompted the visitors to call a timeout.
  • Jones and Hammond added a pair of threes and Roberts added a layup, extending Coppin's lead to as many as 36-17, and the Eagles took a 38-20 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Eagles continued to increase their lead throughout the third and put the game out of reach in the fourth, outscoring Saint Francis, 16-5 in the final ten minutes.
  • Hammond sandwiched a Red Flash three with two of her own, giving CSU a 30-point advantage, and Gaston hit a triple with 2:08 to play for the final points of the game.
