Lawrence, Jones Lead Women’s Hoops Past North Florida at UNF Thanksgiving Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Laila Lawrence and Angel Jones combined for 40 points as the Coppin State women's basketball team shot a season-high 50.9% from the floor in a 76-61 win at North Florida on Friday afternoon at UNF Arena. The Eagles improved to 4-3 and close out at UNF Thanksgiving Tournament against Stephen F. Austin tomorrow at 3:30 pm.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Lawrence posted her fourth double-double of the season, leading all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go with 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals. She made her lone 3-point and free throw attempt as well.
  • Jones narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 18 points, a career-high nine rebounds, five assists and a steal.
  • Tiffany Hammond and Dani McTeer were also in double figures with ten points apiece, followed by Tyler Gray with seven points.
  • Hammond hit a pair of threes and all four of her free throws while dishing out three assists to go with three steals.
  • Niyah Gaston, Cire Worley, Arielle-Vadrelle Belinga and Mickelle Lowry also got on the board for the Eagles.
How it Happened
  • Jones hit a three following her own defensive rebound to open the game, followed by a pair of layups by McTeer, giving the Eagles an early 7-5 lead.
  • UNF answered with a three to take their first and only lead of the game at 8-7 with 7:14 left in the first.
  • Lawrence responded with an old-fashioned three-point play, followed by a triple from Hammond as Coppin extended its advantage to 20-14 after one.
  • The Ospreys pulled to within 22-20 with a pair of threes to start the second quarter before Jones and Hammond buried shots from deep, quickly getting the lead back to eight.
  • Coppin's run did not stop there as Worley hit a layup, followed by back-to-back buckets from Lawrence, giving CSU a 34-20 lead at the 1:28 mark.
  • Jones answered a UNF layup with one of her own to close out the half as Coppin went into the break with a 36-22 lead.
  • The teams played virtually even in the second half as Coppin led by as many as 19 points and UNF was not able to get within nine.
