Women’s Hoops Goes Cold in Second Half in Loss to Undefeated Stephen F. Austin

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Coppin State's women's basketball team went cold from the floor in the second half, falling to Stephen F. Austin, 81-60 on Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena, wrapping up the UNF Thanksgiving Tournament.  The Eagles fell to 4-4 on the year while the Ladyjacks remained perfect at 7-0.

  • Laila Lawrence notched another double-double, leading all players with 17 points and 13 rebounds to go with an assist and two steals. Lawrence hit 9-of-12 from the line en route to her fifth double-double of the season.
  • Angel Jones and Tiffany Hammond also finished in double digits, recording 15 and 12 points, respectively. Hammond buried four threes in the game and now has 70 3-pointers during her CSU tenure.
  • Dani McTeer, Tyler Gray and Cire Worley combined for 16 points with Gray dishing out a game-high five assists.
  • Coppin made just 7-of-26 (26.9%) from the floor while SFA made 15-of-21 (71.4%) over the final 20 minutes to pull away.
  • SFA held a large 34-18 advantage in the paint despite the Eagles holding a 36-28 advantage on the glass.
  • Coppin committed 21 turnovers which turned into 28 points for the Ladyjacks.
  • Four SFA players scored in double figures as the 'Jacks shot 57.4% from the floor and 20-of-22 from the compared to 34.5% for the Eagles.
How it Happened
  • SFA scored the first four points of the game before Gray put the Eagles on the board and Lawrence tied the score at four with a pair of free throws.
  • The Jacks scored seven of the next nine points and scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 23-15 lead after the first.
  • After the teams traded buckets to start the second, Coppin went on a 10-0 run over a 2:26 stretch, turning a 28-20 deficit into a 30-28 lead with Lawerence scoring points at either end of the spurt, sandwiching threes from Jones and Hammond.
  • Jones answered a SFA basket with one of her own, giving the Eagles back the lead, and following a lead change, McTeer converted on a layup just before the half, sending CSU into the locker room with a 37-36 advantage.
  • Coppin maintained control for the first half of the third quarter before SFA scored seven-straight points to go up 50-43 at the 2:37 mark.
  • McTeer stopped the drought with a three and a jumper by Jones cut the deficit to 50-48 before the Ladyjacks closed the period with three-straight points, taking a 53-48 lead.
  • SFA extended the lead into double digits minutes into the fourth period and it got up to 69-54 with just over five minutes remaining.
  • Hammond hit a three and Jones added a pair of free throws, but SFA sealed the win with seven-straight points.
