Women’s Hoops Pulls Away from Sacred Heart in Fourth Quarter

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Laila Lawrence posted a double-double and two other Eagles scored in double figures as Coppin State's women's basketball team defeated Sacred Heart, 59-47 on Sunday afternoon at William Pitt Center.  With the win, the Eagles evened their record at 3-3 overall while the Pioneers fell to 2-4.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Lawrence finished with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting, hitting a 3-pointer and made 3-of-4 from the line to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. She also finished with four steals, two assists and a block.
  • Tyler Gray hit 7-of-10 from the line en route to scoring 13 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
  • Angel Jones added 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals.
  • Off the bench, Cire Worley finished with nine points and seven rebounds, followed by Tiffany Hammond with five, Dani McTeer with four and Niyah Gaston with two.  Hammond added six rebounds, three assists, a block and two steals as well.
  • Coppin narrowly outshot Sacred Heart, 34.5% to 32.3% but made 18-of-26 from the line compared to just 4-of-8 for the hosts.
How it Happened
  • Sacred Heart started the game off strong, getting out to an 11-5 lead midway through the first.
  • After trading buckets, Worley hit a three and converted on a transition layup to cut the score to 13-12 after one.
  • Coppin took its first lead since the game-opening bucket on a three by Hammond, making it 17-15 with 3:32 left in the half.
  • The Eagles extended their lead to as many as 20-15 before halftime on a jumper by Lawrence at the 2:27 mark but Sacred Heart pulled within two at the break.
  • Coppin led by seven twice in the third quarter, but each time the Pioneers cut it close, but not to fruition.
  • Sacred Heart pulled to within 40-38 with a layup to start the fourth, but Coppin scored the next eight points over the next 4:18 to extend its lead to double digits.
  • With 2:05 remaining, Sacred Heart once again pulled to within five, before Lawrence hit a jumper and Gray sealed it with five free throws in the final minute.
Up Next: Coppin will head to the Sunshine State for the holiday and compete at the UNF Thanksgiving Tournament on November 29-30.  The Eagles first play host North Florida at 1 pm on November 29, followed by Stephen F. Austin at 1 pm on November 30.
