Volleyball Falls in MEAC Semifinals to #3 Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – Coppin State's volleyball team was swept, 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-18) at Delaware State in the MEAC Semifinals on Saturday night.  The Eagles fell to 16-16 on the year while the Hornets advanced to the Finals and improved to 16-13.
 
Sophia Bertotti Metoyer led Coppin with 11 kills while hitting .364 and she was followed by TaKenya Stafford with nine, Deviana Walker with seven, Ahzhi Coleman with five and Gabriela Zuquelo with four. Coleman led the blockers with four on the night and Walker added a pair as well.
 
Azul Pilahg had 18 assists to Kahea Carvalho's 13 as the Eagles hit just .121 compared to .181 for the Hornets. Coco Figueroa led all played with 16 digs and Zuquelo added 12 more.
 
Coppin got out to a large lead at 14-7 in the first but was unable to hang on.  Delaware State quickly got back into it with five-straight points and took its first lead at 18-17 following another 4-0 run. The Eagles regrouped with a 4-0 run of their own with kills from Walker and Bertotti Metoyer, retaking the lead and going up 21-18. A late 4-0 spurt by the Hornets gave them the first set-point at 24-23 and they eventually took the opener on back-to-back kills.
 
CSU got out to a good start once again in the second and led 6-2 following four-straight points with kills from Walker and Stafford as well as an ace by Zuquelo. DSU tied the score back up at eight and led by as many as three the rest of the way.
 
The Eagles scored the first four points of the third and took a 6-1 lead which quickly evaporated as the Hornets went on a 6-1 run to go on top, 12-9. Coppin was unable to get any closer than two points as DSU began to pull away with another four-straight points.
