ORANGEBURG, S.C.- Coppin State's volleyball team solidified a winning record in conference play with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-19) victory at South Carolina State on Friday night at Dukes Gymnasium. The Eagles improved to 12-14 on the season and 8-2 in the MEAC.
TaKenya Stafford led all players with ten kills to go with eight digs and three aces, and she was followed by
Ahzhi Coleman with eight kills on .545 hitting and four blocks, and
Sophia Bertotti Metoyer with seven kills.
Deviana Walker and
Ezgi Kucuk chipped in with three kills apiece.
Azul Pilahg led CSU with 17 assists while
Kahea Carvalho had another 17 as the Eagles outhit the Bulldogs, .196 to .000.
Coco Figueroa led all players with 15 digs.
South Carolina State gave Coppin all it could handle in the opening set and led by as many as 14-11. The Eagles rallied to tie the score at 18, and the teams traded points until the Bulldogs held a set-point at 24-23. Walker and Coleman had back-to-back kills to go up 25-24 and CSU won the first on a South Carolina State error.
After alternating points to open the second, Coppin pulled away with an 8-1 run with aces from Stafford and Bertotti Metoyer. The Bulldogs got no closer than a six-point deficit and the Eagles closed it out on a 5-0 run, capped off with an ace by Stafford.
Coppin put some distance between it and the hosts with a 6-1 run midway through the frame, thanks in large part to a pair of kills from Bertotti Metoyer. The Bulldogs got as close as four points with Coleman clinching the match with a solo block.
CSU returns to action on Sunday, November 3 when it heads to NC Central for a 1 pm start.
