BLACKSBURG, Va. – Laila Lawrence led all scorers with 20 points as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell at Virginia Tech, 86-51, on Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum. The Eagles now stand at 2-3 on the year while the Hokies improved to 3-1.
Inside the Numbers
- Lawrence hit 7-of-17 from the floor with a 3-pointer and made 5-of-8 from the line for her second-straight game with 20 points. She added three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Niyah Gaston was also in double figures, matching a career-high with 12 points on four 3-pointers.
- Angel Jones added eight points, followed by Cire Worley with five while three other Eagles hit a field goal.
- Tyler Gray led the Eagles with five rebounds to go with four assists and matched Lawrence with two steals.
- Virginia Tech put four players in double figures and outshot Coppin, 56.9% to 34.6% and held a 37-23 advantage on the glass.
How it Happened
- Gray, Lawrence and Jones all scored early buckets to give Coppin a 6-5 lead at the 6:14 mark of the first quarter.
- Virginia Tech answered with a 9-2 run before Lawrence buried a triple, cut the deficit to 13-11 with 3:10 left in the first.
- A 10-1 spurt by the Hokies extended their advantage to double figures and they led 25-15 after the period despite a late three by Gaston.
- Jones hit two free throws and Lawrence converted inside to start the second quarter before Virginia tech responded with 13-straight points to go up, 40-21.
- Worley nailed a three just before the half to make it a 42-24 margin at the break.
- Dani McTeer started the third with a jumper and Lawrence scored on back-to-back possessions, cutting the deficit to 48-30, but Coppin got no closer the rest of the game.
- Gaston hit three of her four 3-pointers in the third, but Virginia Tech shot a whopping 10-of-14 (71.4%) with five threes in the period to continue pulling away.
