BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Coppin State's baseball team held on for an 11-10 NEC victory at Long Island University on Saturday afternoon at LIU Baseball Stadium. The Eagles improve to 15-29 on the year while going 8-15 in the Northeast Conference.
Led by freshmen
Angel Colon and
Keith Gardner who recorded three hits apiece, Coppin outhit the Sharks, 15-13, its second highest hit total of the season.
Brett Curran, Liam McCallum and
Mike Dorcean also had multi-hit games with Curran also drawing a pair of walks from the leadoff spot. Colon, McCallum and
Brody Black all drove in a pair of runs.
Marcos Herrand got credit for the win and now stands at 6-5 on the year, allowing four runs while striking out five in 5.0 innings.
Nico Felber was charged with three earned runs over the allowing an earned run.
Rashad Ruff struck out three and his fourth save is tied for the fifth-most in CSU single-season history.
McCallum and Black drove in runs in the first inning before Coppin erupted for five runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to go on top, 11-0. In the fourth, five different players recorded RBI with base hits, including a double by Curran. McCallum's double drove in a pair of runs in the fifth.
LIU got on the board with four runs in the fifth, cutting Coppin's lead to 11-4 before Felber replaced Herrand to start the sixth. The Sharks plated one in the bottom of the inning and took advantage of three Eagles errors in the seventh to cut the deficit to a single run.
Looking to add an insurance run in the eighth, Dorcean led off the frame with a double but was thrown out at home trying to score on a single from
Brian Nicolas with one out. After the side was retired, Ruff threw 1-2-3 eighth and ninth innings to close it out.
The Eagles will look to win the series when they close out weekend at LIU on Sunday, May 7 at 12:00 pm.
