BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped its NEC series finale at Long Island University, 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at LIU Softball Stadium. With the loss, the Eagles now stand at 15-30 overall and 8-16 in conference play.
Jordan Hamberg pitched well in the loss, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out seven in 5.0 innings.
Giovanni Canales and
Tim Ruffino each gave up two runs in relief before
Tyler Nichol tossed the final 1.1 innings without issuing a hit or a walk.
Corey Miley had two of the team's five base hits, including a double, while
Angel Colon, Liam McCallum and
Brian Nicolas all had hits.
Brody Black drew a pair of walks and was also hit by a pitch twice. McCallum and Nicolas also recorded walks to reach base twice safely.
LIU took an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first by Jake Mastillo and he hit a solo home run in the fifth to go up two runs. The Sharks also added a run with a sac bunt in the sixth before tacking on three more in the seventh.
Coppin continued to leave runners stranded as 14 Eagles were left on base. CSU left the bases loaded in the fourth and a pair on in the first, seventh and eighth innings, going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
The Eagles faces a familiar opponent next weekend for a three-game NEC series at Delaware State on May 12-14. Friday's game starts at 3:00 pm, followed by 1 pm on Saturday and 12 pm on Sunday.
