NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's softball team fell to #3 North Carolina Central University, 10-1 on Thursday night in the MEAC Tournament at NSU Softball Field. CSU (14-27) will play the winner of Howard/Maryland Eastern Shore at 3 pm on Friday, May 12 for a chance to advance to Saturday's MEAC Championship Game.
Manaia Fonoti went 2-for-3 with a double and the team's lone run as
Seryna Esparza drove her in with a single.
Celeste Gonzales and
Aniyah Haley also had base hits for Coppin while Gonzales and Fonoti also stole bases.
Vanessa Carrizosa was charged with six earned runs over the first 3.0 innings while
Isabel Tobias allowed two earned runs in her lone inning of work.
NC Central scored five runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of defensive miscues by Coppin as all five runs came after a two-out error.
CSU got on the board in the third on an RBI single by Esparza through the right side, driving in Fonoti who doubled to right center just prior.
Central got that run back and added two more in its half of the third before recording a two-run home run to end the game in the fifth.
