NORFOLK, Va. – Vanessa Carrizosa picked up her third complete game victory of the MEAC Tournament and
Seryna Esparza hit a two-run home run to lift the Coppin State softball team to a 3-0 victory over Howard on Friday afternoon at NSU Softball Stadium. The Eagles advance to their first-ever MEAC Championship Game where they will take on third-seeded North Carolina Central at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 13.
A junior from Moreno Valley, Calif., Carrizosa blanked the Bison, giving up eight hits and striking out two. Carrizosa improved to 14-13 on the year with her 16
th complete game and third shutout of the season.
After a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, Esparza went opposite field for a two-run home run, driving in Fonoti who reached on a wild pitch. The blast was Esparza's team-leading third home run of the season.
Carrizosa escaped trouble over the next two innings, stranding a pair of Bison in each before issuing just a single in both the fifth and sixth innings.
CSU got an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single up the middle by
Celeste Gonzales. Scoring on the play was
Ava Camarena, who was hit by a pitch before stealing second base.
