NORFOLK, Va. – Avianna Peterson hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to lift the Coppin State softball team to a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Morgan State in the MEAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at NSU Softball Stadium. This is the first time since 2011, and just the second time ever that the Eagles (14-26) have won a pair of games in the MEAC Tournament.
With the score tied at 1-1 and one out in the seventh, Peterson hit a towering shot over the fence down the left field line, giving CSU a 2-1 lead.
Vanessa Carrizosa then threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, forcing three ground balls to pick up her second-straight complete game victory of the Tournament.
After three scoreless innings to start the game,
Brissa Alvarado hit a solo home run to left center, putting the Eagles on top, 1-0 in the fourth. Carrizosa retired the Bears in order in the bottom half, but the Bears put together three hits in the fifth to tie the score.
Seryna Esparza had a pair of hits for CSU while Peterson and Alvarado's home runs were the only other hits for the Navy & Gold. Carrizosa allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four to improve to 13-12 on the year.
Neither team scored in the sixth before the Eagles took the lead on Peterson's first home run of the season in the seventh.
Coppin will play the winner of Norfolk State/North Carolina Central at 6 pm on Thursday, May 11.
