NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games at Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at NSU Softball Stadium. After a 9-1 loss in game one and a 3-2 defeat in the nightcap, the Eagles now stand at 4-17 overall and 1-6 in the MEAC.
After a pair of scoreless innings to start game one, Norfolk State put up multiple runs in the next four innings and ended the game in the sixth with a two-run home run. Coppin got on the board in the top of the sixth on
Manaia Fonoti's triple to left, which scored
Brissa Alvarado who had walked to start the frame.
Avianna Peterson drew a pair of walks, reaching safely twice in the game.
Vanessa Carrizosa gave up five runs on eight hits in the first 4.0 innings before
Shawnee Ronyak was credited with three earned runs in 1.0 innings of relief.
The Eagles got out to an early lead in game two with a pair of runs in the second on RBI from
Brooklyn Tapusoa and
Celeste Gonzales.
Brandilyn Reymer and
Isabel Tobias combined for a scoreless first, striking out a pair of Spartans and Tobias also got a 1-2-3 second inning for the Eagles.
Tobias also got through the third unscathed, but Norfolk State scored three runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.
CSU threatened in the seventh as
Dillon Morgan drew a walk, followed by
Ava Camarena's single but the Green & Gold got a strikeout to end the game.
Tobias was charged with three runs on four hits while striking out a pair in 5.1 innings of work.
The same two teams will meet on Monday, April 3 in a 12 pm start.
