DOVER, Del. – Coppin State's softball team completed a three-game sweep of Delaware State with a 6-1 victory over the Hornets on Monday afternoon. This is the first time that the Eagles (8-23, 5-10 MEAC) have swept the season series with Delaware State.
Celeste Gonzales and
Brissa Alvarado both had multi-hit games, with a double, two runs scored and a walk apiece. Gonzales also stole a season-high three bases.
Aniyah Haley drove in a pair of runs as
Manaia Fonoti,
Xzylia Maravilla and
Brooklyn Tapusoa all recoded base hits. Maravilla also drew a pair of walks.
Vanessa Carrizosa picked up her third win of the series from the circling, throwing the last 3.2 innings while allowing just three hits while striking out one.
Isabel Tobias went the first 3.1 innings and gave up just one run on two hits.
The Eagles got out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Gonzales drew a leadoff walk, and after advancing to second on a sac bunt, Coppin drew four-straight walks to get out in front.
Delaware State got one of the runs back in its half of the second, and CSU remained ahead, 2-1 until blowing the game open with a four-run fifth. Gonzales once again got it started, this time with a leadoff double, before scoring on Fonoti's single to left center. Following a single from Alvarado, Maravilla drove in
Seryna Esparza with a single of her own, and Alvarado scored as well on the play.
Following a pitching change, pinch runner
Avianna Peterson came around to score on a sac bunt from Haley to extend the advantage to five runs.
Carrizosa retired six of the next seven batters before the Hornets threatened to score in the seventh to no avail.
CSU returns to action for a single game at 4 pm on Wednesday, April 19 at University of Delaware before hosting NC Central in a three-game MEAC series on April 22-23.
