NEWARK, Del. – Coppin State's softball team fell at University of Delaware, 8-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Softball Stadium. The Eagles, who had won four-straight games, now stand at 8-24 on the season while the Blue Hens move to 23-16.
Celeste Gonzales had two of Coppin's six base hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs.
Seryna Esparza, Brissa Alvarado, Xzylia Maravilla and
Aniyah Haley also had base hits with Alvarado and Haley collecting RBI.
Isabel Tobias went the distance in the circle, allowing six earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead on RBI singles from Alvarado and Haley. Scoring on the base knocks were Gonzales and Alvarado.
Delaware got both runs back in its half of the first to tie the score, and after Tobias held them scoreless the next two innings, the Blue Hens took a 4-2 lead with two runs in the fourth.
CSU rallied for a pair of runs in the seventh as Gonzales drove in
Phaedra Smith and
Ava Camarena.
Coppin returns to action when it hosts NC Central in a three-game MEAC series on April 22-23. A 1 pm doubleheader will be played on Saturday, followed by a 12 pm single game on Sunday. Prior to Sunday's game, the Eagles will honor seniors
Brissa Alvarado, Avianna Peterson and
Shawnee Ronyak.
