Softball Drops Pair of Close Games at Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at Meadows Field.  The Eagles (4-15) were edged, 3-2 in game one, before falling 3-0 in the nightcap.

Seryna Esparza and Aniyah Haley both had a pair of hits in the opener, with Esparza's two-run double giving Coppin a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brissa Alvarado, who extended her school-record for career walks with a pair of free passes, and Haley both scored on Esparza's two-base knock.

Mount St. Mary's scored one in its half of the first and tied the score with another run in the third before taking the lead in the fourth.

The Eagles threatened in the fifth as Alvarado drew a walk, followed by a single from Haley. Mount St. Mary's made a pitching change and both runners were left stranded and CSU did not put a runner on base the next two innings.

Vanessa Carrizosa recorded a complete game in the circle, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out a pair in 6.0 innings.

Brandilyn Reymer and Shawnee Ronyak combined to allow just two hits in game two, but did not get any run support as Haley and Carrizosa had the only two hits for the Eagles.

Reymer went the first 5.1 innings without allowing a hit as The Mount scored a run in the first and two more in the sixth.  Ronyak retired the only two batters she faced to end the sixth inning.

CSU heads to Norfolk State for a three-game MEAC series on April 1-2 with a 1 pm doubleheader on Saturday. A 12 pm single game will be played on Sunday.
