CARY, N.C. – Emperess Johnson blanked her opponent in singles play, but the Coppin State women's tennis team fell to Norfolk State, 6-1 on the opening day of the MEAC Roundup on Thursday afternoon at Cary Tennis Park.
Indy Ampaw and
Hana ElSherif combined for a win at No. 3 doubles, but the Spartans picked up the doubles point with victories in the first two slots.
Johnson won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles over NSU's Niya Grant while
Kenyange Kaounde took a set in the fifth spot over Zada McMorris before falling 10-5 in the third. Elsewhere in singles play,
Megan Etienne picked up five games in a loss at No. 2 while
Mackenzie Jones won four games in the opening set in the fourth spot.
Making her CSU debut, ElSherif and Ampaw defeated the NSU duo of McMorris and Grant, 6-2, while Coppin's top pairs both fell, 6-1.
Coppin takes on NC Central and South Carolina over the next two days to close out the MEAC Roundup.
