DOVER, Del. – Mike Hood scored a game-high 24 points while
Sam Sessoms finished an assist shy of a double-double as Coppin State's men's basketball team defeated Delaware State, 82-72 on Monday night at Memorial Hall. The Eagles move to 8-22 on the season and 3-10 in the MEAC while the Hornets fall to 6-22 overall with a 4-9 mark in league play.
Inside the Numbers
- Hood finished with a season-high 24 points, hitting six 3-pointers and 6-of-7 from the line as the Eagles put five players in double figures.
- Sessoms finished with 11 points on just 4-of-6 shooting along with nine assists and five rebounds.
- Justin Steers and Nendah Tarke added 12 points apiece as Justin Winston added ten points and eight rebounds in just his second game back from injury.
- Kam'Ron Blue and Greg Spurlock also contributed with seven and six points, respectively.
- Coppin shot a season-high 59.6% from the floor, its highest since Juan Dixon took over as head coach in the 2017-18 season, and the highest by an Eagles team since they shot 60.0% in a 89-72 win over DSU on February 21, 2011.
- The Eagles also made 12-of-25 (48.0%) from 3-point range while holding the Hornets to 41.5% shooting.
- Martaz Robinson led the Hornets with 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals.
How it Happened
- Delaware State clung to a small lead throughout the beginning of the first half before Hood hit his second three of the game at the 11:14 mark, giving the Eagles a 17-16 advantage.
- The Hornets regained the lead with four-straight points before Winston and Tarke hit back-to-back buckets and another stepback three from Hood with 7:17 to play.
- After a DSU layup cut CSU's lead to 26-25 with 4:53 remaining, Hood and Blue hit back-to-back threes, starting an 11-0 Eagles run.
- Delaware State ended the half with a three, but Coppin still led 37-28 at the half.
- Coppin remained in control the entire second half, not allowing its lead to get under nine during the final 20 minutes.
- The Eagles used a 16-3 run midway through the half to extend their lead to as many as 72-49 with 5:33 remaining. Coppin held the Hornets without a field goal for nearly eight minutes during the stretch.
