CORVALLIS, Ore. – Coppin State's baseball team held a 3-1 lead and got back-to-back home runs from
Jordan Hamberg and
Sebastien Sarabia in the fifth, but the Eagles fell at 19
th-ranked Oregon State, 19-5 on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Sarabia went 3-for-4 while Hamberg went 2-for-5 in the series finale as Coppin recorded nine base hits on the afternoon.
Brody Black tripled and drove in a run,
Corey Miley drew a pair of walks and
Brian Nicolas,
Josh Hankins and
Bryce Thompson all connected for hits.
Hamberg took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs over the first 3.1 innings.
Tim Ruffino,
Nico Felber and
Tyler Nichol combined to give up 15 runs before
Giovanni Canales got the final out of the eighth.
Oregon State got out to an early advantage with a leadoff home run in the first, but Hamberg settled down to get out of the inning without further damage and gave up just one hit in the second.
Coppin put a three-spot on the scoreboard in the third with an RBI triple from Black scoring Miley. Hamberg then singled through the right side to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead before Nicolas extended the lead with an RBI sacrifice bunt.
The Beavers tied it at 3-3 in their half of the third before scoring four in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead.
After a pair of outs, Hamberg went opposite field for a solo home run before Sarabia followed up with his first home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 7-5.
It was all OSU from there as the Beavers scored four in the fifth and one in the sixth. Felber threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning, but the Beavers scored seven in the eighth.
The Eagles will play at Navy on Wednesday, March 1 in a 3:00 pm start.
