Josh Hankins Records Three Hits as Baseball Falls at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Josh Hankins had three base hits and drove in a run as Coppin State's baseball team fell at Navy, 10-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium. The Eagles and Midshipmen now have identical 3-5 records on the season.

Hankins finished 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, but Corey Miley was the only other Eagles player to record a base hit. Brody Black, Brett Curran and Jordan Hamberg drew two walks apiece while Mike Dorcean walked once and scored a run.

Juan Pablo Hernandez took the loss, allowing four runs over 2.0 innings while striking out five. Giovanni Canales pitched the next three innings and was credited with three runs on just one hit. Clay Thompson and Tyler Nichol both threw an inning while Nichol struck out three before Rashad Ruff fanned two of the four batters, he faced in the eighth.

After a scoreless inning, Navy scored four in the second before Coppin got one of the runs back in the third. Curran walked to lead off the frame and got to third on Hankins' double down the left field line. Curran then scored on Anthony Divittorio's groundout to first.

Canales threw a 1-2-3 third inning, allowing the Eagles to cut the deficit in half on an RBI single by Hankins in the bottom half.  Scoring on the play was Dorcean from second after he got into scoring position following a pair of walks.

The Midshipmen plated three runs in the fourth on just one hit to extend their lead to 7-2, and it stayed that way until the sixth.  Canales got another 1-2-3 inning in the fifth before Thompson gave up a run in the sixth. Navy scored two more in the seventh as Coppin stranded three runners in the final two innings.

Coppin will head to Lexington, Va., for a three-game series at Virginia Military Institute on March 3-5. Friday's game starts at 5 pm, followed by 3 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
