WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin State's women's basketball team was outscored, 24-6 in the third quarter as the Eagles fell at George Washington University, 55-41 on Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The loss drops Coppin to 3-8 while GW evened its record at 5-5.
Angel Jones led the Eagles with 13 points, followed by
Mossi Staples with 11 points and
Laila Lawrence with ten. The rest of the team scored just seven points with
Faith Blackstone recording four points and
Tiffany Hammond with three. Lawrence had a team-high six rebounds to go with two blocks while
Colleen Bucknor blocked three shots.
GW put three players in double figures and had another with nine points as it outshot Coppin, 39.1% to 30.6%. The hosts took 15 more shot attempts than the Eagles thanks to 14 offensive rebounds and forcing 16 turnovers.
How it Happened
- GW jumped out to an 8-2 lead as held a 13-6 advantage after the first as Jones recorded four points along with a layup by Staples who continues to near the 1,000-point mark in her career.
- Lawrence recorded a pair of buckets to start the second quarter, pulling CSU to within, 13-10, before GW quickly pushed its advantage back to 20-12.
- Blackstone hit a pair of free throws, starting a CSU 9-0 run which gave the Eagles the lead following a free throw by Lawrence with 1:41 remaining.
- The Buff & Blue retook control with a jumper and led 22-21 at the half.
- GW hit a three to start the second half which Blackstone answered with two more free throws, but the hosts then scored 17 straight points before Lawrence stopped the drought with a bucket with just under two minutes left in the frame.
- The deficit proved too much for CSU to overcome as they got no closer than 14 points in the fourth, following a three by Hammond in the closing seconds.
