VESTAL, N.Y. – Laila Lawrence led all players with a season-high 27 points along with ten rebounds as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell at Binghamton, 64-52, on Sunday afternoon at the BU Events Center. The Eagles fell to 3-9 on the season while the Bearcats improved to 3-8.
Lawrence made 11-of-17 field goals and five free throws, finishing two points shy of her career-high which was set last season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as a member of Texas A&M-Commerce. Her ten rebounds helped her notch her league-leading fifth double-double and she also added three steals and a block.
Tyler Gray added a season-high eight points in her most extensive playing time of the season while
Mossi Staples,
Charia Roberts and
Angel Jones added five points apiece. Staples now has 985 total points in her career.
Binghamton outshot Coppin, 47.4% to 34.5%, holding the Eagles without a 3-point field goal and Coppin shot just 12-of-23 from the free throw line. The Bearcats pulled away in the second half by shooting a blistering 60.7% while CSU made just 37%.
How it Happened
- Lawrence scored ten first-quarter points which included a game-tying layup in the closing seconds before blocking a shot as the buzzer sounded.
- Binghamton opened the second quarter with a three, but Roberts gave CSU its first lead of the game with a pair of free throws at the 5:52 mark.
- The Bearcats regained the advantage with a bucket at the other end which Roberts answered with 1:11 left as the teams went scoreless for just over four minutes.
- BU went into the half with a 23-22 lead on a layup with 22 seconds remaining and opened the second half on a 15-5 run to get a double-digit lead.
- Lawrence led a CSU run in the final minutes of the third, cutting the deficit to 43-39 with just under a minute left before Binghamton scored with five seconds left to go up six.
- An early jumper by Tiffany Hammond, along with a pair of free throws by Lawrence got Coppin to within 47-43 with 8:32 left to play, but Binghamton scored seven-straight points and the hosts maintained a double-digit advantage nearly the rest of the way.
