Rally by Women’s Hoops Against North Florida Falls Just Short

BALTIMORE – A rally by the Coppin State women's basketball team came up just short in a 49-43 loss to North Florida on Monday afternoon in front of 3,552 fans on Education Day at PEC Arena.  Both teams now stand at 3-7 on the season.

Angel Jones scored a game-high 12 points and was followed by Faith Blackstone and Laila Lawrence with 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Both Blackstone and Lawrence had three blocks while Jones added three steals. Blackstone also had three assists to lead Coppin.

Mossi Staples added eight points, five rebounds and a pair of steals as Colleen Bucknor matched Lawrence with a team-high eight rebounds.

Coppin shot just 26.3% from the field compared to 39.6% for the Ospreys and the Eagles made just 9-of-18 from the stripe.

How it Happened
  • Coppin had to dig themselves out of 16-0 hole, scoring just two points on 1-of-15 shooting in the first quarter with Jones hitting a jumper just before the end of the period.
  • The Eagles pulled to within, 20-16 with 2:44 left in the half as Staples hit back-to-back threes, followed by another triple from Jones.
  • North Florida stopped the drought with two threes of its own, extending the advantage back to double digits before two free throws by Blackstone made it a 26-18 score at the half.
  • Lawrence and Jones helped keep Coppin alive in the third quarter, pulling to within five points going into the final period.
  • Lawrence opened the fourth with a layup and added a free throw to make it a two-point game with 8:40 remaining.
  • Jones then answered an Ospreys three with one of her own to keep the margin the same.
  • With just 39 seconds to play, Staples once again made it a one-possession game with a layup at 46-43.
  • Coppin quickly fouled and UNF converted on both of its free throws.
  • After a CSU timeout, the Eagles missed three 3-pointers as the Ospreys escaped with a win.
