Hammond Drains Seven 3-Pointers as Women’s Hoops Falls to #6 LSU in Front of Sold-Out PEC Arena

BALTIMORE - Tiffany Hammond went off for a career-high 21 points and Laila Lawrence posted another double-double as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell to 6th-ranked LSU, 80-48 in front of a sold-out PEC Arena on Wednesday night. The Eagles fell to 3-10 on the year while the Tigers (12-1) have now won 12 straight games.

The announced 4,100 fans in attendance is the most in the history of PEC Arena which opened in 2009.

Hammond hit seven 3-pointers, also a career-high, and finished one short of the CSU single-game record, held by Tiara Goode who made eight at Towson on December 3, 2016.

Lawrence finished with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go with 11 rebounds and three steals. Faith Blackstone was also in double figures with ten points.

LSU outshot Coppin, 47.8% to 34.0% and outrebounded the Eagles, 48 to 26. The Tigers scored 52 points in the paint and tallied 26 points off CSU turnovers.

Baltimore native Angel Reese led all players with 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting to go with six rebounds and a career-high five steals. Flau'Jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow also finished in double figures for the Tigers. Last-Tear Poa set a career-high with eight assists.

How it Happened
  • LSU got out to a quick start with the first six points before Hammond buried her first three of the game at the 6:57 mark.
  • The Tigers answered with an 11-0 run before Lawrence went to work with three field goals despite a tough defensive effort.
  • Coppin trailed, 24-10 after the first, but played even with the defending national champions in the second quarter.
  • At one point during the period, Coppin pulled to within 28-20 after starting the stanza on a 10-4 run with a pair of threes by Hammond.
  • LSU extended its lead to 40-26 at the half, but not before Hammond hit another three, as did Lawrence with 1:37 left.
  • The third quarter was all LSU, who outscored Coppin, 24-7 to pull away.  The Tigers shot a blistering 64.7% from the floor in the quarter.
  • Hammond hit two more threes in the fourth and Blackstone got on track as well, converting on a three before driving to the hole for a bucket late in the frame.

Up Next: Coppin returns to action on Thursday, December 28 when it heads to Duke University for a 7 pm tipoff on ACCNX.
