Blackstone Scores Game-High 16 Points as Women’s Hoops Falls at Duke in Non-Conference Finale

DURHAM, N.C. – Faith Blackstone led all players with 16 points as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell at Duke University, 68-34 on Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.  The Eagles fall to 3-11 before starting conference play next month while the Blue Devils improved to 8-4.
 
Blackstone made 8-of-17 shots from the floor to score a game-high while adding six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Laila Lawrence followed with six points to go with a team-high seven rebounds and two steals. Cassandra Hawthorne added five points, including a 3-pointer, while Tiffany Hammond and Angel Jones had three points apiece.
 
Coppin shot just 27.8% from the floor compared to Duke's 40 percent shooting.  The Blue Devils were boosted by going 21-of-25 from the line compared to just 2-of-7 for the Eagles. Duke held a big advantage on the boards and recorded 17 second-chance points and 25 points off turnovers.
 
How it Happened
  • Duke started the game on a 17-0 run before Lawrence hit a jumper with 2:15 left in the quarter to put Coppin on the board.
  • Jones hit a free throw just before the quarter to make it a 20-3 score after one.
  • The Blue Devils scored the first six points of the second before Blackstone got going with back-to-back jumpers.
  • A layup by Hawthorne in the closing seconds of the half made it a 36-9 halftime deficit.
  • Coppin played nearly even with Duke in the second half with Blackstone scoring eight points in the third.
  • The Eagles went on an 11-0 run in the early minutes of the fourth to pull within, 55-32 with 4:25 remaining, but Duke outscored them 13-2 down the stretch.
