BALTIMORE – Despite a game-high 13 points from
Laila Lawrence, Coppin State's women's basketball team was downed by George Mason, 70-38 on Sunday afternoon at PEC Arena. The Eagles fell to 3-4 overall while the Patriots remain undefeated at 7-0.
Lawrence hit 6-of-10 shots from the floor, including a three, to lead all scorers while
Faith Blackstone added seven points.
Tyler Gray finished with five points, a team-high seven rebounds and four assists and she was followed by both
Tiffany Hammond and
Mossi Staples with four points apiece,
Niyah Gaston with three and
Charia Roberts with two in her return from injury.
Coppin was outshot, 37.5% to 26.4% and George Mason outrebounded the Eagles, 50-35. The Patriots capitalized on their 16 offensive rebounds with 23 second-chance points and scored 21 fastbreak points.
How it Happened
- George Mason started the game on an 11-2 run with an early jumper by Blackstone tying the score at two.
- Coppin pulled to within five points in the first after jumpers from Gray and Lawrence.
- The Patriots kept extending their lead in the second quarter and took a 37-18 advantage going into halftime, but Coppin pulled within striking distance with six-straight points in the third.
- GMU scored the last six points of the stanza and continued to hold Coppin at bay in the fourth.
