BALTIMORE – Zahree Harrison and
Justin Winston scored 12 points apiece as Coppin State's men's basketball team fell in its home opener to Towson, 70-49 on Thursday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles are now 0-2 on the year while the Tigers even their record at 1-1.
Harrison hit 3-of-7 from the field and grabbed a team-high five rebounds to go with two assists and three steals to lead the way for Coppin. Winston made 4-of-11 from the floor while freshman
Camaren Sparrow hit a pair of threes and finished with eight points, four rebounds and three steals.
Greg Spurlock added six points off the bench, followed by
Ryan Archey and
Luka Tekavcic with four points apiece.
Khali Horton also hit a three and
Preist Ryan blocked a pair of shots.
Towson outshot Coppin, 44.4% to 34.8% and outrebounded the Eagles, 51-20 which translated into 19 second-chance points.
How it Happened
- Coppin kept it close for most of the first half and found themselves trailing by just, 22-17 with 5:41 remaining as Harrison and Archey hit a pair of free throws apiece.
- Towson came right back with a bucket at the other end to start a 6-0 run and the teams traded baskets the rest of the period with Harrison, Spurlock and Sparrow finding the bottom of the net for the Eagles.
- Harrison and Horton answered a pair Towson 3-point plays with threes of their own to keep it an 11-point deficit early in the second.
- The Tigers pulled away with a 16-0 run as Coppin went scoreless for over six-and a half minutes.
- Coppin finished the game with three-straight field goals in transition coming from Winston, Sparrow and Harrison.
