PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Coppin State's volleyball team won its sixth-straight match with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-23) victory at Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday afternoon at Hytche Center. The Eagles now stand at 18-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in MEAC play.
TaKenya Stafford and
Laila Ibrahim had 11 and ten kills, respectively, on a combined .378 hitting to lead the offense while
Hope Casel added nine more kills on .375 swinging.
Paola Caten and
Geraldyn Palacios combined for nine kills and
Divine Muo added another.
Andrea Tsvetanova was credited with 27 assists and six aces to go with six digs, matching Stafford for second on the team in digs.
Ashley Roman had a match-high 13 digs while Palacios and Ibrahim were issued two blocks apiece.
The Eagles hit .315 to just .163 for the Hawks.
Set 1
- After falling behind early, Coppin put some distance between them with a 5-0 run, turning a 9-8 deficit into a 13-9 lead with Ibrahim tallying three kills along with an ace by Tsvetanova.
- The Hawks got no closer than two points the rest of the way and Coppin sealed the frame with a block by Stafford and a kill from Ibrahim.
Set 2
- Coppin led from start to finish and pulled away with a 13-0 run to take a 21-7 lead.
- During the stretch, Ibrahim had four points with two kills and two blocks while Tsvetanova had five aces.
- The Hawks pulled to within single digits before a kill from Muo and an ace by Serrano ended the set.
Set 3
- Coppin overcame a five-point deficit midway through the set and scored five-straight points to pull within, 19-18.
- After consecutive points by the Hawks, the Eagles went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-21 lead.
- UMES retook the lead at 23-22 before kills from Stafford and Casel bookended a UMES error to take the match.
