BALTIMORE – Sam Sessoms scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds as Coppin State's men's basketball team fell to Delaware State, 71-66, on Monday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles fall to 6-18 on the year and 1-6 in the MEAC while the Hornets improve to 4-16 with a 3-4 mark in league play.
Inside the Numbers
- Sessoms hit 8-of-17 from the floor with three 3-pointers and made all four of his free throws to lead all scorers. With his 11 rebounds, Sessoms notched his third double-double of the season and added four assists, three steals and a block.
- Justin Steers also finished in double figures for Coppin, tallying 15 points while making 9-of-12 from the line, four rebounds and a block.
- Alex Rojas made all three of his shot attempts to finish with nine points. Nendah Tarke added seven points, five rebounds and two blocks. Daniel Titus chipped in with five points, followed by Greg Spurlock with four and three from Mike Hood.
- Despite playing just 11 minutes, Kam'Ron Blue was credited with four rebounds and three blocks.
- Delaware State narrowly outshot Coppin, 38.5% to 38.2%, but outrebounded the Eagles, 47-30 and recorded 15 second-chance points and 19 points off turnovers.
- Four Hornets finished in double figures, led by Martaz Robinson with a double-double 20 points and ten rebounds.
How it Happened
- After Delaware State scored the first five points of the game, Coppin responded with a 14-2 run, capped off by a three-point play from Sessoms with 12:24 left in the half.
- The Hornets came right back to tie the score at 17-17 at the 8:04 mark before the Eagles built their lead back to as many as 32-23 with another old-fashioned three-point play from Sessoms with 2:46 remaining.
- DSU hit a jumper with just over a minute to go before hitting a pair of threes in the final ten seconds of the period to pull within 32-31 at the half.
- Robinson hit a jumper to open the second half, giving the Hornets back the lead, but CSU got the lead back and took a 49-44 lead with 13:09 left after a pair of free throws from Steers.
- An 11-1 Hornets run followed as DSU took a four-point lead before Hood hit a three to cut the deficit to 55-54 with 7:13 remaining.
- Delaware State answered with a bucket and led by as many as 65-56 at the under-four media timeout.
- Steers hit a free throw and a pair of jumpers from Titus and Sessoms made it a 65-61 deficit with 2:16 left. Steers hit two more from the stripe with 1:16 remaining to keep the deficit at four, but Coppin missed its next five shot attempts as Delaware State held on for the win.
