Coleman, Roman Hit Historic Milestones as Volleyball Takes Two from SWAC Teams

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Miajavon Coleman and Ashley Roman hit historic milestones as Coppin State's volleyball team won a pair of matches to open the ISTAP HBCU Challenge on Friday at Alabama State University's Lockhart Gymnasium and Acadome. The Eagles defeated the host Hornets, 3-1 to open the day before sweeping Alabama A&M, 3-0 to close it.

Inside the Numbers
  • With her final kill to win the match against Alabama State, Coleman hit the 1,500 career kills mark which puts her sixth in MEAC history.  Coleman tallied 16 kills with just two errors on 42 swings to hit .333 for the match while adding eight digs and a block on the defensive end.
  • Roman was credited with 29 digs to also eclipse the 1,500 mark in career digs. She also ranks sixth in the history of the MEAC, now with 1,515 career digs.
  • Ammaarah Williams and Hope Casel also had nine kills apiece for Coppin, with Casel hitting .280 on the day. 
  • Geraldyn Palacios added six kills on .235 hitting while Andrea Tsvetanova and Ahzhi Coleman chipped in with three each. 
  • Tsvetanova notched a double-double with 32 assists and ten digs.
  • The Eagles hit .225 for the match while ASU recorded a .133 hitting percentage
How it Happened
 
First Set
  • Miajavon Coleman helped Coppin open an insurmountable lead, recording back-to-back kills to give the Eagles a 7-4 lead.
  • Following a kill by the Hornets, the Eagles went on a 5-1 run and led by as many as eight before taking the opener, 25-17.
Second Set
  • After holding a 3-2 lead following an ace and a kill by Tsvetanova, Coppin was unable to contain the Hornets who ran off four-straight points.
  • ASU closed the set on a 5-0 run to tie the match.
Third Set
  • Trailing, 6-5, Coleman opened a 6-0 CSU run with a kill which also saw a kill and two blocks from Yaniris Miller-Green.
  • The Eagles later went on an 8-2 run, which included five-straight points off kills from Coleman and Palacios and a trio of ASU errors.
  • Williams closed the frame with a kill and an ace, giving the Eagles a 25-12 victory.
Fourth Set
  • Coppin looked to pull away, getting out to a 16-10 with nine kills in the first third of the set.
  • However, Alabama State battled back with five-straight points to pull within one before a kill by Williams stopped the bleeding to extend the advantage back to 17-15.
  • The Hornets scored two-straight to tie it up at 17-17 before CSU answered with four-straight with kills from Coleman, Williams and Palacios.
  • ASU pulled back to within 22-21 before Coleman struck back-to-back kills before forcing a Hornets error to win the match.

  • The Eagles won three-straight sets to defeat the Bulldogs, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-17).  Stats were not available at the time.
Up Next: Coppin closes the weekend with Alcorn State in a 11 am start on Saturday, September 10 at Lockhart Gymnasium.
