Softball Run-Rules Delaware State in Nightcap of Doubleheader

BALTIMORE - Coppin State's softball team split a pair of MEAC games against Delaware State on Friday afternoon at CSU Softball Complex.  After a CSU rally fell just short, 5-4 in the opener, the Eagles run-ruled the Hornets, 13-3, in five innings in game two.

Game 1

Brissa Alvarado led the Eagles with two runs and drew two walks.  Shawnee Ronyak also had two runs and an RBI triple.  Makayla Caballero had two hits including an RBI single.  Isabella Zalba finished with an RBI single and a run.  Vanessa Carissoza hit a double with two runs and a stolen base.  Alexis Genovese hit an RBI single, while Olivia Edmondson scored a run.

After trailing in the first three innings 2-0, Carrisoza threw a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth before Ronyak tripled to right center to drive in Alvarado.   Genovese struck a sacrifice for a run from Edmondson to tie the score at 2-2 in bottom of the fifth.

The Eagles took the lead in the sixth with and RBI single from Caballero, driving in Zalba for a 3-2 lead.

In the seventh inning, Delaware State scored off of back to back RBI doubles and added another run shortly after to take a 5-3 lead.  In the bottom of the seventh, Zalba hit an RBI single to center field to bring in Alverado.  Avianna Peterson advanced to third on the base knock, but as she attempted to catch the defense napping to tie the game, she was tagged out at home with a throw from shortstop.

Game 2

Carrisoza led the Eagles in game two where she went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.  Jaslyn Sanchez went 1-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs.  Avianna Peterson went 2-of-3 and scored two runs.  Brissa Alvarado went 2-of-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Makayla Caballero was 1-of-1 at bat and scored two runs.  Shawnee Ronyak had two RBI singles and Lynn Porter scored a run.

Coppin started the first inning strong opening with an RBI double from Alvarado for a run from Carrisoza.  Two plays later, Alvarado scored a run off of an RBI from Ronyak.

The Eagles scored four runs in the second inning alone.  Carrisoza hit a 2-RBI double for a pair of runs from Sanchez and Caballero.  Shortly after, Zalba hit an RBI triple for a run from Carrisoza.  The momentum continued with an RBI single from Ronyak as Zalba scored a run.

In the third inning, the Eagles scored another four runs on three hits and took advantage of a oair of DSU errors.  Peterson led off the frame with a double before advancing to third on a sac bunt and scoring as Jaslyn Sanchez reached on an error.  Following another sac bunt, Sanchez scored on Carrizosa's single to right field. Brissa Alvarado then singled up the middle which scored Lynn Porter, and the throw trying to retire Alvarado at second was wild and allowed Alvarado to score as well.

The Hornets came back with two runs in their half of the fourth to pull within, 10-3, but the Eagles scored three of their own to run-rule their opposition.  Peterson once again got it started with a double before scoring on Makayla Caballero's single to center.  Sanchez and Genovese then had back-to-back hits to score two more, putting the game out of reach.

Kayleigh Reome then threw a 1-2-3 fifth inning to seal the win, which included a strikeout to finish it off. Ronyak got the win on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits over 3.1 innings while striking out four.
