Softball Rallies for Series Win Over Delaware State

BALTIMORE – Avianna Peterson hit a walk-off single through the left side of the infield to cap a furious seventh inning rally, lifting Coppin State's softball team to a key 6-5 MEAC victory over Delaware State on Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Eagles took two of the three games against the Hornets.

Coppin trailed, 5-0, after four innings before Isabella Zalba put the Eagles on the board with a two-run bomb over the fence in left field to make it three-run game.  Maren Bernal then threw a 1-2-3 in the top half of the inning and faced the minimum in both the sixth and seventh innings to keep the game in reach.

Alexis Genovese was plunked by a pitch to start the seventh but was forced out at second on a fielder's choice from Vanessa CarrizosaBrissa Alvarado moved her over to second with a single before both advanced on a passed ball.

After a punchout for the second out of the inning, Shawnee Ronyak reached on a fielding error which scored both Carrizosa and Alvarado.  Ronyak was replaced by Lynn Porter, who scored on Melanie Aguilera's double to the gap in left center, tying the score at 5-5, before Peterson's game-winning hit.

Bernal got the win in relief as she allowed just two hits in 5.0 innings while facing just one more than the minimum over those innings.

Genovese and Alvarado both had a pair of hits on the day while Alvarado also drew two walks to go a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs. Peterson also drew a walk to reach safely twice.

The Eagles return to action on April 19 when they make up a single game against Howard University at 6 pm at Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
