JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Saint Peter's on Wednesday afternoon at the Peacocks' Jaroschak Field. The Eagles fell in game one, 2-1, before taking an 8-2 loss in the nightcap.
After falling behind, 2-0 after the first inning of the opener,
Shawnee Ronyak held Saint Peter's scoreless with just three hits the rest of the way. Coppin left a runner on base in each of the first two innings before breaking through with a run on back-to-back doubles by
Alexis Genovese and
Vanessa Carrizosa.
Coppin threatened again in the fifth as Genovese and
Brissa Alvarado drew walks to put a pair of runners on but was unable to capitalize.
Isabella Zalba had a pair of hits in the opener while Ronyak received the loss in the complete game, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out two.
In the nightcap, Coppin got out to a 1-0 lead on
Avianna Peterson's sacrifice fly in the first inning. Genovese and Carrizosa had singles to open the game and Genovese advanced to third on a fly ball off the bat of Alvarado. Carrizosa then stole second base but was stranded in scoring position.
Saint Peter's came right back with three runs in the first and two in the second off
Kayleigh Reome who also went the distance for CSU. The Eagles stranded four runners over the next four innings and Reome kept it close before giving up a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.
The Eagles were able to score once in the seventh, which came off Carrizosa's RBI single, but recorded the final out with two runners on.
Carrizosa had three hits in the nightcap while four other Eagles players had base knocks. Reome allowed five earned runs in the complete game.
CSU hosts Delaware State in a three-game MEAC series on April 15-16. Friday's doubleheader is set for 1 pm, followed by a 12 pm single game on Saturday.
