BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team dropped a 7-6 decision at MEAC rival Morgan State on Sunday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field.
Vanessa Carrizosa,
Shawnee Ronyak and
Isabella Zalba had two hits apiece while Zalba scored twice and Carrizosa and Ronyak drove in one.
Brissa Alvarado also had a hit and an RBI while
Makayla Caballero and
Desiree Carrizosa added base hits.
Vanessa Carrizosa threw her seventh complete game of the season, allowing six earned runs while striking out five.
Morgan State took an early lead with two runs in the first, but Coppin cut the lead in half following singles by Zalba and Ronyak and a passed ball which scored Zalba. The Bears responded with two more runs in the bottom half to take a 4-1 lead.
Coppin erupted for four runs in the third to take its first lead of the game at 5-4.
Desiree Carrizosa singled to start the frame before
Alexis Genovese sacrificed her over with a bunt. A single by
Vanessa Carrizosa singled her sister in from second before back-to-back singles from Alvarado and Zalba loaded the bases.
Melanie Aguilera then reached on an error to score
Vanessa Carrizosa before a fielder's choice off the bat of Ronyak drove in Alvarado and Zalba.
Vanessa Carrizosa struck out the side in the MSU half of the third, but the Bears regained the lead at 7-5 with three runs in the fourth.
The Eagles rallied in the seventh and scored a run on an RBI from Alvarado which scored Genovese from second. Morgan, however, was able to retire the side by getting the final two batters out.
