WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sam Sessoms recorded his 2,000
th career point and finished with a team-high 23 points as Coppin State's men's basketball team fell at George Washington University, 83-71, on Tuesday night at Charles E. Smith Center. The Eagles now stand at 4-9 overall while the Colonials improve to 6-4.
Inside the Numbers
- Sessoms finished 10-of-14 from the floor and hit 3-of-5 3-pointers to record his tenth 20-plus point game of the season. He also recorded three rebounds and two assists.
- Needing just eight points to hit 2,000 points, Sessoms achieved the milestone with a floater in the lane with 12:24 left in regulation.
- Daniel Titus finished with a season-high 16 points while making 7-of-11 field goals along with two rebounds, two steals and a block. He came into the contest with just three points on the season.
- Nendah Tarke also finished in double figures, tallying 15 points to go with a team-high five rebounds and three steals.
- Mike Hood and Isaiah Gross added seven and six points, respectively, while Alex Rojas chipped in three points.
- Coppin outshot GW, 50.9% to 45.9%, but the Colonials hit ten 3-pointers, 17-of-19 free throws and outrebounded the Eagles, 42-22.
- Four Colonials finished in double figures, led by James Bishop with 30 points.
How it Happened
- Coppin held the lead for most of the first half as Tarke and Titus scored the team's first 18 points. Tarke had ten of those points as the Eagles led, 18-14 with 11:06 left.
- Isaiah Gross converted on an old-fashioned three-point play following a turnover, extending the advantage to 21-14 at the 10:36 mark before GW went on a 12-0 run.
- Gross stopped the drought with a three from the corner before Sessoms got on the board with back-to-back layups.
- Following his own steal, Hood drove in for a layup with just under two minutes left but GW maintained a small lead going into the half.
- Titus scored Coppin's first six points of the second half but the Colonials extended their lead well into double digits.
- Sessoms' floater, which gave him 2,000 points, cut the deficit to 52-40 with 12:24 remaining which started a long run by Coppin.
- Over the next 4:52, Sessoms scored 11 points before Tarke buried a three to make it a 63-58 deficit with 6:15 remaining.
- The Colonials responded with seven-straight points and maintained a double-digit lead for almost the remainder of regulation.
