DOVER, Del. – Coppin State's volleyball team forced another five-setter with Delaware State after falling behind, 2-0, but the Eagles dropped a 3-2 decision this time around on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Hall. Despite the loss, the Eagles remain in first place in the MEAC standings at 20-9 overall and 11-2 in league play.
Inside the Numbers
- The Eagles got a team-high 16 kills from Yaniris Miller-Green and double-doubles from Ammaarah Williams (13 kills, 13 digs), Miajavon Coleman (11 kills, 10 digs) and Andrea Tsvetanova (47 assists, ten digs).
- Ahzhi Coleman hit .500 with eight kills on 16 swings along with a team-high three blocks while Geraldyn Palacios chipped in with five kills.
- Tsvetanova added a pair of aces and has a Nation-leading 87 on the season which is the sixth-most in the NCAA since a 25-point scoring format was adopted in 2008.
- Ashley Roman finished with 26 digs and matched a season-high with four aces.
- DSU got a match-high 21 kills from Alondra Maldonado while Karen Cordero recorded 11 kills, 13 digs and six aces.
How it Happened
- The opening set was all Delaware State with the hosts hitting .409 to Coppin's .000. DSU closed the set with 12 straight points.
- Coppin held a 15-11 lead in the second following a kill from Miajavon Coleman but the Hornets rallied to tie the score at 16 all.
- The Eagles forced an error and got a kill from Ahzhi Coleman but DSU came right back with a 7-0 run before taking the frame by trading points the rest of the way.
- Coppin trailed throughout the third set but rallied to tie the score at 19-19 following a 3-0 run after a kill from Williams and a block from Miller-Green and Ahzhi Coleman.
- DSU responded with three-straight points to force a Coppin timeout at 22-19. The Eagles answered with four-straight points, featuring kills from Miajavon Coleman and Miller-Green to give Coppin its first lead of the set at 23-22.
- Following a Hornets timeout, Williams served an ace and prompted another DSU timeout. The Hornets got a kill out of the break before Miller-Green forced a fourth set with a kill.
- After falling behind early in the fourth, Coppin regrouped to take a narrow lead. The Eagles extended their advantage to as many as 14-8 and 21-15 but Delaware State would not go away, cutting the deficit to just three points.
- The teams traded points until DSU errored on a serve before recording an attack error which forced a deciding set.
- In the fourth set, Coppin hit .323 compared to just .097 for the Hornets.
- Delaware State got out to a 4-0 lead to open the fifth and Coppin head coach Tim Walsh quickly called a timeout. The team responded with a 4-0 run of its own before the Hornets regained the lead with a block.
- Coppin then forced a pair of errors which included a block from Miller-Green before Roman served up her fourth ace of the day. Following two more DSU errors, Coppin led 9-5 and forced a Hornets timeout.
- The stoppage paid dividends for Delaware State as it rallied with a 5-1 run to tie the score at 10-10 and forced the second CSU timeout of the set.
- DSU got two more points out of the break, and after what looked like a kill from Miajavon Coleman, a long stoppage ended in a replay and the Hornets capitalized to extend their lead to 13-10.
- Back-to-back kills from Palacios and Williams this time got the Eagles back to within one at 13-12 before the Hornets closed it with back-to-back kills.
