CATONSVILLE, Md. – Coppin State's men's basketball team got 22 points and seven assists from
Sam Sessoms as well as a career-high 14 points from
Christian Sutton in a 109-82 loss at UMBC on Wednesday night at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. The Eagles now stand at 3-6 on the season while the Retrievers even their record at 4-4 overall.
Inside the Numbers
- Sessoms made 7-of-11 shots from the floor, including 6-of-7 from the line, along with seven assists and five rebounds. He went over the 1,900 career point plateau in the contest and now has 1,911 career points.
- Sutton, a graduate transfer from American University, drained four threes and added a pair from the line to finish with 14 points while adding three steals. Coming into tonight, Sutton had 12 career points in 28 games.
- Justin Steers also finished in double figures with ten points on 6-of-6 shooting from the line. Nendah Tarke added eight points, followed by Luka Tekavcic with a career-high six points and four rebounds.
- Justin Winston, Malik Battle and Mike Hood all had five points apiece.
- UMBC shot the lights out from deep, making a school-record 21-of-44 (47.7%) from deep. The Retrievers hit 15-of-28 3-pointers in the first half to get out to a 65-36 lead at the break.
- The hosts narrowly outshop Coppin, 48.7% to 46.3% but scored 33 points off turnovers and got 29 assists on 37 made baskets.
- Jacob Boonyasith scored 24 points with five 3-pointers, all coming in the first half.
How it Happened
- UMBC came out firing from outside, hitting a pair of early 3-pointers, but Nendah Tarke kept it close with a pair of driving layups.
- After a three by Alex Rojas cut the deficit to 13-10 at the 15:41 mark, the Retrievers began to pull away with a 15-2 lead which featured ten-straight points from Boonyasith.
- Sessoms stopped the spurt with a layup which Boonyasith answered with another three.
- The next six field goals by the Retrievers all came from deep, extending UMBC's advantage to 51-27 before taking a 65-36 halftime lead.
- Despite the deficit, Coppin outshot UMBC in the first half, 56.5% to 52.5%, but UMBC's 15 threes were too much to overcome.
- Three of Sutton's 3-pointers came in the second half, with the first of those coming with 6:25 left in regulation which was part of a 23-0 CSU run.
- UMBC stopped a five-plus minute scoreless streak with a jumper at the 2:22 mark and Coppin ended the game on another 10-2 run.
