Bucknor Posts Double-Double as Women’s Hoops Falls at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – Colleen Bucknor led four Eagles in double figures with 12 points and 14 rebounds as Coppin State's women's basketball team was edged at Old Dominion, 70-63 on Sunday afternoon at Chartway Arena.  The Eagles are now 2-5 on the season while the Monarchs improve to 3-3.

Inside the Numbers
  • Bucknor and Hope Evans tallied a team-high 12 points apiece while Mossi Staples and Jewel Watkins both scored 11 points. Bucknor's 14 rebounds are a career-high and it was the first double-double of her career.
  • Evans also pulled down seven rebounds while adding a pair of assists and two steals. Staples was credited with a team-high four assists and Alexandria Hamilton chipped in with six points and three steals.
  • Old Dominion got 15 points from Kaye Clark and outshot Coppin, 49.1% to 31.6%.
  • The Eagles got to the line at will, converting on 23-of-29 free throws, and turned 13 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points.
How it Happened
  • Old Dominion scored the first six points of the game before Bucknor got Coppin on the board with a layup. The Eagles got just one more field goal in the period with the rest coming on free throws as the Monarchs led, 18-12 after ten minutes.
  • Coppin threatened to tie the score in the second, making it a one-possession game three times in the quarter but ODU kept the lead, maintaining a 31-27 lead at the break.
  • ODU opened the period on a 14-1 run to extend its lead to 45-28 with 4:33 remaining, but Coppin continued to fight.
  • Staples started a run with an old-fashioned three-point play off a steal from Lucia Reos, and Hamilton scored the final four points of the quarter, cutting the deficit to 55-43.
  • Coppin outscored ODU, 20-15, in the fourth, getting as close as seven points on a pair of occasions.
