Tarke, Sessoms Combine for 39 Points in Men’s Hoops’ Loss at Unbeaten Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Nendah Tarke and Sam Sessoms combined for 39 points as Coppin State's men's basketball team fell at local rival Towson, 83-67 on Tuesday night at SECU Arena.  With the loss, the Eagles fall to 3-4 while the Tigers remain unbeaten at 5-0.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Tarke scored a game and season-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting while hitting all four of his free throws.  He stuffed the stat sheet with five rebounds and four steals as well.
  • Sessoms tallied 19 points while making 8-of-17 from the floor and dished out five assists.
  • Kam'Ron Blue also finished in double figures with 12 points, all coming on a season-high four 3-pointers.  Blue matched Tarke and Justin Winston with a team-high five rebounds while Winston chipped in with six points.
  • Towson got balanced scoring four players in double figures, led by Charles Thompson with 18 points and ten rebounds.
  • The Tigers shot 52% from the floor compared to 41% for the Eagles and outrebounded Coppin, 42-25.  Towson got 17 second-chance points and 26 points from its bench compared to just five for CSU.
How it Happened
  • Coppin came out of the gates hot, going on a 7-0 run to start the game which included five points from Sessoms.
  • After three-straight points from the Tigers, Sessoms and Winston hit back-to-back layups to give Coppin its largest lead at 11-5 at the 16:31 mark.
  • Towson took over the first half with a 23-0 run as CSU went scoreless for over eight minutes before Blue hit his first three of the night.
  • Following Towson's long run, Coppin cut the lead in half by the half with Tarke recording an old-fashioned three-point play before hitting back-to-back threes.  Blue also hit a three before Sessoms recorded four points in the final minute of the period.
  • Towson hit a jumper right out of the block to start the second half before Blue buried a three, cutting the deficit to 46-39 with 17:35 left to play.
  • That would be as close as Coppin would get the rest of the way as Towson built up its advantage to as many as 83-65.
Up Next: Coppin is back in action on Friday, November 25 when it travels to face University of Maryland for a 4 pm tipoff at XFINITY Center.  This is the Eagles' first game against the Terrapins since December 12, 1989, a 70-63 Eagles' victory.
