BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team outscored Georgetown in the second half but was unable to overcome a large first quarter deficit in a 50-35 loss to the Hoyas in front of 2,800 fans at PEC Arena on Wednesday morning. The Eagles fall to 1-3 on the season while Georgetown improves to 2-1.
The Eagles were hosting its second Baltimore Public Schools Day with several elementary and middle schools from the Baltimore area in attendance.
Inside the Numbers
- Jalynda Salley scored a team-high eight points for the Eagles along with eight rebounds and a pair of blocks.
- Mossi Staples and Hope Evans followed with seven points each and Lucia Reos scored the first six points of her collegiate career with a pair of threes. Staples had a team-high four assists.
- Colleen Bucknor led all players with ten rebounds along with her three points and a block.
- Coppin made just 1-of-17 shots in the first quarter as Georgetown led, 17-3 after the first. The Eagles shot much better the rest of the way and trailed, 29-11 at the half.
- CSU outscored the Hoyas, 16-13 in the third quarter and played even with Georgetown in the fourth.
- Georgetown outshot Coppin, 37.0% to 23.0%, but the Eagles outrebounded the Hoyas, 42-39.
- Three Hoyas scored in double figures, paced by Kristina Moore with 14 points.
How it Happened
- Georgetown scored the first five points of the game before a layup by Salley cut the deficit to 5-2 at the 7:46 mark.
- The Hoyas closed the period on a 12-0 run and Coppin got back on the board with a layup by Bucknor with 6:46 remaining in the second. Bucknor hit a free throw, starting an 8-2 Eagles run which got Coppin to within, 22-11.
- Coppin went into the half trailing, 29-11 and pulled to within 12 points in the third before the Hoyas extended their lead once again.
- Salley opened the fourth with a pair of buckets and Reos buried a three from the wing with just under six minutes left, to pull CSU within ten.
