BALTIMORE – Mossi Staples scored 21 points to lead the Coppin State women's basketball team to a 58-53 win over Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon at PEC Arena.  The Eagles now stand at 2-3 on the season while the Peacocks fall to 0-3.

Inside the Numbers
  • Mossi Staples scored a team-high 21 points with three 3-pointers while Hope Evans was also in double figures, matching a career-high with ten points. Evans also had three assists while Staples was credited with a pair.
  • Jewel Watkins added eight points with seven rebounds, followed by Jalynda Salley with six points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
  • Cortney Gardner tallied five points and both Alexandria Hamilton and Colleen Bucknor recorded four points apiece.
  • Both teams shot an identical 20-of-55 (36.4%) from the floor while Saint Peter's made six threes to Coppin's five.  The difference was the Eagles making 13 free throws to SPU's seven.
How it Happened
  • Coppin got out to a fast start as Watkins buried a three, followed by a layup by Staples just under a minute later.
  • Saint Peter's pulled to within 11-10 before Gardner hit a three while Salley and the Peacocks traded layups, giving Coppin a 16-13 lead through one period.
  • The Eagles opened the second quarter on an 10-1 run with Staples hitting a three and converting on an old-fashioned three-point play.
  • After a layup from Hamilton made it a 26-14 score, Saint Peter's got its deficit to within double figures before CSU closed the half on a 12-2 run.
  • Staples scored seven of the team's final 12 points in the period, including a three with 41 seconds remaining.
  • The teams played virtually even in the third, with SPU cutting the deficit into single digits before Gardner hit a turnaround at the end of period to make it a 47-36 score.
  • Staples scored five of the fourth quarter's first seven points and Salley hit a pair of free throws, increasing CSU's lead to 54-38, but the Peacocks did not go away.
  • A 15-2 run by the Peacocks made it a one-possession game with just under a minute to play but Bucknor made back-to-back free throws in the closing seconds.
Up Next: The Eagles close out non-conference play with ten-straight road games, starting with a trip to Rhode Island on November 22 at 6 pm which will be televised on ESPN+.
