Jewel Watkins Scores Career-High 24 Points in Win at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coppin State's Jewel Watkins went off for a career-high 24 points to lead the Navy & Gold to a 78-49 win at Winthrop on Sunday afternoon at Winthrop Coliseum.  The victory was the first of first-year head coach Jermaine Woods' career.

 Inside the Numbers 
  • Watkins' career game started off strong, and she continued her hot-shooting throughout, making 9-of-15 from the floor with six 3-pointers.  She also pulled down eight rebounds while dishing out four assists.
  • Colleen Bucknor also had the best game of her career, finishing with a career-high 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting while matching Watkins with a team-high eight boards.
  • Mossi Staples was also in double figures, recording 18 points with three 3-pointers while making 7-of-8 from the line.  She added a career-high eight assists to go with five rebounds and was credited with three steals.
  • Alexandria Hamilton added seven points while Cortney Gardner and Hope Evans had four points apiece.  Khya Jenkins also added a bucket.
  • Coppin outshot Winthrop in the battle of the Eagles, 50.0% to 37.5%.  CSU made 9-of-22 (40.9%) from deep and 13-of-17 (76.5%) from the stripe.
  • CSU outrebounded Winthrop, 38-25 and converted for 18 second-chance points.
 
How it Happened 
  • Watkins hit a pair of threes and scored eight of the team's first ten points to get Coppin out to a quick, 10-4 lead.
  • Winthrop responded with a three-point play before CSU went on a 6-0 run, all on free throws, which included Staples hitting four-straight on a technical foul at the 3:00 mark.
  • CSU closed the period on a 7-4 run and outscored Winthrop, 16-13 in the second to take a 39-24 lead into the half.
  • Coppin continued to pull away in the third with Bucknor and Hamilton hitting shots to open the quarter.
  • A three by Watkins, her fifth of the day, increased Coppin's lead to 49-29 with 5:50 left in the period and CSU held a 55-34 advantage going into the fourth following a jumper by Hamilton with just under a minute remaining.
  • Winthrop opened the fourth with a jumper but Coppin answered with a 16-5 run while five different players scored, increasing the lead to 71-41 with 3:46 to play.
  • After a WU layup, Staples answered with a three before Bucknor and Watkins added buckets in the final minutes.
