Women’s Hoops Hosts Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday Afternoon

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Coppin State women's basketball team will host University of Maryland Eastern Shore for a 2 pm  tipoff on Saturday, January 29.  Fans can follow all of the action live on www.coppinstatesports.com and the game will be televised on NXT LVL.

Coppin Contributors  
Jaia Alexander leads the conference with 15.4 points per game and ranks third with 7.4 rebounds per game. Alexander also is 2nd in the MEAC in free-throw percentage at 79.7 percent.  Aliyah Lawson is putting up 11.7 points (5th in MEAC) and second in the league in three-point field goals, totaling 40 made threes for the season. Lawson is also ranked fifth in assists at 2.9 APG.   Mossi Staples is averaging 9.5 points per game (12th) and is ranked third in the MEAC in both assists (3.3) and steals (2.3).   Jalynda Salley is ranked eighth in the conference in rebounds (6.3 RPG) and seventh in blocks (0.9), while averaging 7.8 points per game. Her 50.9 percent shooting from the floor and 2.9 offensive rebounds per game lead the MEAC. Colleen Bucknor averages a block a game which places her fifth in the MEAC, while also standing at sixth in rebounds (6.4 RPG).    


Climbing the Charts  
Aliyah Lawson surpassed Thelma Lyles to solidify third place in CSU history with 124 career 3-pointers.  She is now third all-time, and six threes away from matching Genesis Lucas for second all-time.  Jalynda Salley has 96 career blocks to place her fifth all-time.  Salley will match Chance Graham at fourth with her next block, and two more will tie Yvette Larkins for third.


Last Time Out
Coppin fell to Howard in a heated battle, 80-74.  Jaia Alexander led three Eagles in double figures with 15 points and six rebounds.  Aliyah Lawson tallied 11 points, while leading all players in assists with five.  Jalynda Salley scored 10 points, three rebounds and shot 5-of-7 from the field.  Colleen Bucknor was one point and one rebound shy of a double- double, as she finished the night with nine points, nine rebounds, and contributed pairs of blocks and steals.  Jewel Watkins had eight points and tied Bucknor with two blocks.   


About the Matchup  
Coppin stands at fourth in the conference while UMES is sixth.  This will be the first matchup against UMES under head coach Laura Harper.  The last time the teams faced each other was in the MEAC playoffs of the 2019-20 season. Coppin fell 62-50, after splitting UMES in conference play.   


Scouting the Hawks  
University of Maryland Eastern Shore is the top team in the MEAC offensively, averaging 63.7 points per game, led by Amanda Carney with 8.1 points per game.  The team is coming off of a 81-59 victory against N.C. Central after a six-game losing streak.  Taylor Clayborne led four Hawks in double figures with 15 points, while Ariana Seawell tallied a double-double of 12 points and ten rebounds.
